「Hellow」

DearMr. Takeda;
I am finally back home, while my wife staying a few more
days to attend her women's college reunion party. She will
be back on Thursday, May 29.
I heard that there was a big earthquake in the Tohoku
District. How are your family and school collegues?
I appreciate your kindness when I visited your school.
I was really embarassed to make a speech in front of your
math class. I suppose that my speech was unorganized,
uninteresting, and boring to young students. However, I was
really shocked to find out that there was absolutely no
response from students. I had read that some foreign
university professors made lectures or speeches to college
students without getting any students' responses at all.
I am sure that I was like them previously. I urge strongly
that Japanese should speak up so that they could express
their opinions; otherwise, they will be misunderstood.
While we were in Japan, we visited our friends and
relatives some of whom are getting weak physically and mentally.
I was fortunate to an opportunity to meet you
 and your colleagues.
                                            Hideo Nakayama

「India & Nepal Trip」

My wife and I went to India, Jan. 2 to 15, and Nepal, 15 to 20 in
13-member group tour. In short India has glorious past but miserable
present; whereas, (6 of us to) Nepal is cleaner than India. And women and
children have to carry water pumps to home, no toilets inside (but outside
fields). We saw a primary and secondary schools where students sat on
building floors and outside grounds. The weather was cool and cold early
mornings and evenings but pleasant in daylight times. It rained one
afternoon in Nepal.
In India we explored Old and New Delhi, Tiger sanctuary (too bad nobody
saw a tiger on the day, and I had sore-throat cold because of cold air and
dusts and suffered throughout the trip), had elephant and camel rides (my
wife complained of uncomfortable ride on a camel-claiming of "not RAKUDA",
i.e., uncomfortable ride), saw many palaces and forts (great marvelous
architecture), Taj Mahal (World Heritage Building), and cruise on the Ganges
River at Varanasi (where Hindis wish to die, have cremated, and have ashes
put in the river-very depressing sights of dead bodies lying on river bank,
cremation smoke uprising, people taking baths, washing clothes nearby, and
walking thru narrow dirty alleys with cows droppings around).
Shrines, palaces, and forts are magnificent. However, The rich-and poor
gap is great; and most people are living on poverty level, dirty and
unsanitary. We covered some developing countries, but India is one of the
worst. India has many complex problems-invisible strings by races,
languages, and castes systems hampering improvements and progresses. Basic
infrastructures need more improvements-electricity, roads, sewage system, and
housings are either minimal and/or non-existent. For example, even national
highways are poorly paved, half-covered at most places. We had heard about
miserable and sad environments in India, but we never imagined such awful
conditions. In rural areas most of houses lack electricity, no running water
(women carried water jugs on heads.)
On the other hand Nepal is a wonderful country-people are better dressed
and living in small houses. We saw old temples. On the last day we had an
airplane ride to flyby the Mt. Everest and Himalaya Mountains -magnificent
spectacles out-of-this-world sight!
The difference between our most east- and west-bound places is about 15
longitude degrees that means we missed 1-hour time zones of 24s. Adding
these countries we covered 59 countries.

「World Trade Center 」

Thank you for your concern. My wife and I found that our son went to work
taking a subway to Newark, New Jersey. His train was the last one leaving
New York City.
He arrived at the work, but there was no public transportation available back
to New York City. Fortunately, one of his co-workers took him to outside of
NY City by his car. Then he took a public transportation to NYC; however, he
had to walk home from around the New York Empire State Building (he sometimes
jogs there.) His wife took a subway to work. she was taking her baby in a
stroller when she saw the World Trade Center burning. Her work place is
located near the World Trade Center. She could not leave the work because of
business matters. Then there was no public transportation availale, and she
had walk for about half an hour.
My brother's son works in the Wall Street; and he is O.K. The brother's
daughter works in Long Island (outside of Manhattan Is.) She could not go
home and had to stay at a friend's house.
These terrorists' actions infuriate me. I can see how Americans felt when
Japan made sneaky attacks at the Pearl Harbor.
Thanks for your considerations--I appreciate. Hideo Nakayama

「Peru & Galapagos Islands in 2000」

From August 18 to September 4 we took a group tour (15 members) to Peru
and Ecuador. In Peru we covered Lima City (museums and government
buildings), Cuzuco City (an oldest existing town in the North and South
America continents-more than 2000 years old and some intricate stone walls of
forts) and Machu Picchu (old Inca Empire ruin on high mountains). In Ecuador
we went to Guayaquill (a port city and a very hot place) and Galapagos
Islands. We sailed to small islands on a small boat rolling, pitching, and
yawing violently by waves which made us very exhausting. I had cold before
the trip; and this rough trip made us very tired. On islands rare animals
and birds had rights of way; and we had to behave very quietly and walked
around to avoid any disturbances. After the trip my family doctor told me
that I had pneumonia and I had to take it easy. Two weeks later I was fine.

「Back home」

Dear sir;
We are back home safe and sound. As I wrote you before briefly, we went
to Japan (from Oct. 10 thru 23) to attend to my old 3-year college 100-year
graduation reunion. I attended Dai-Roku-Koutou-Gakkou (Rokkou) in Okayama
City from 1944 to 1947. I came back to U.S.A. in 1947. At the ceremony I
met some of my old fellow classmates after 53 years. We sang some college
songs (most of them I don't remember).
After the reunion my wife and I visited my ex-classmate, Dr. A. Miyake,
in Imabari City. He and his wfe took us around Shikoku Is. with their cars.
We visited Outsuka Bijutsukan in Naruto City, Kouchi City, Ashizuri Misaki,
and Ishizuchi San. They were really kind and hospitable. We are surely
greatful for thier thoughtfullness.
We came back home yesterday, tired because of jet-time lag.
I still have problem of sending e-mails in Japanese. Someday I will
solve that. Hideo Nakayama

******************************************************

1999 (G) 10 days to Thailand and Singapore and
   (I) 3days to Malaysia and Indonesia
   (I) 11 days to Japan (Tokyo and vicinity, Atagawa,
     and Hamamatsu)

******************************************************

We took a vacation to Japan from April 16 to 26, 1999.
My wife had school reunions of elementary school,
girls middle school, and girls college. I met old
friends from junior college times. When we were young,
we used to say that this girl was good looking and that
girl was sexy looking. Now we were complaining reduced
energy and physical deficiencies--sign of old ages.
Every one welcomed us, and we surely enjoyed our trip
although things were very expensive there. My brother
-in-law took us to 'Botan-Matsuri' near Hamamatsu City.
Best regards to you and your family.

「Northeastern USA and Eastern Canada Travel」

In 1992, my wife and I took a vacation from Sept.
9 to 27 to the northeastern USA and eastern Canada.
We flew to New York City and stayed at our son's
apartment sleeping like sardines (meaning 'zakone').
We took a train to Albany, NY. and attended our
daughter's wedding reception with the groom's mother
and relatives. The new couple had a wedding ceremony in
Berkeley, CA in May. They planned their own wedding
(they arranged a city rose garden for use and restaurant
for reception dinners). The mother-in-law could not
travel because of her old age. We had a party at local
mountain picnic area. Then we went back to New York City
where we visited the Wall Street (a financial center),
Brooklyn Bridge (more than 100 years old),Guggenheim Museum
of modern arts, and etc. We then took a train to Boston,
MA, where we rented a car. Shown below are highlights of
the trip:

Magnetic Hill in Moncton, New Brunswick**

This place appeared to defy the earth gravitational force.
I parked the car at the bottom of a road, turned off the
engine, put gears in neutral position, let my hands off
the steering wheel, and turned off the brake. Then to our
amazement the car started moving backward and upward
(it seemed)-probably results of an optical disillusion.

The Rocks at nearby area**

This place is located at the end of Bay of Fundy, where
the world's widest range of tides is recorded. We saw a
group of big rocks (about 20-meter high) sticking out of
the narrow waterway. My wife was happy to dine a lobster.
Next morning we saw all the big rocks exposed to the
bottoms at low tide (we walked around the rocks)-big
contrast! In the afternoon we went to observe a (supposedly)
big tidal wave, but we were really disappointed to see very
small ripples (about 10-cm high) of water waves coming.

The Sackville Waterfowl Park**

We took leisurely-paced walk to observe wild birds and
plants.

Prince Edward Island**

We took a ferry to the smallest province in Canada. Now
I understand that a bridge was built so that cars can
travel back and forth. As we tried to see the ocean, I
happened to have the car rear wheel fall into a ditch.
I tried to move the car out of it without any luck. I
went a nearby house to ask for help. A truck came and
pulled the car out, costing me $35 in Canadian money
(equivalent to US $20, I suppose).

Cavendish**

The romantic farmhouse of Anne of Green Gables ('Akage-
no-Anne',well known among young Japanese women), written
by Lucy Maud Montgomery. We saw a few young Japanese girls
and a newlywed couple strolling around the house. I suppose
that this place is a Mecca to them. We also saw young
Japanese girls shopping in Charlottetown, the Capital
of P.E.I. Wherever we went, we enjoyed beautiful scenery.
We had another lobster dinner.

Nova Scotia (Nova means new and Scotia means Scot or Scotland)**

This province is said to look like Scotland. In fact we
passed through a town called Inverness (a very small town;
whereas, there are a big towns with the same name in New
Zealand and Scotland-we had never been there, though we went
as close as to Edinburgh and Queenstown in N.Z.).

Badeck Alexander Graham Bell Museum**

He invented telephones. He liked Nova Scotia, because
it reminded him of his native land, Scotland. He built
a laboratory where he made researches in various fields
including seaplanes with floats to be used on water.

Fort Louisbourg**

French built a fort to colonize the area. Later English
troops defeated French settlers. As result, the English
told all French settlers to move out, set fires on villages,
and shipped all French people to mostly around Louisiana,
separating lovers. Those French (called Arcadians in Nova
Scotia area) settled in around New Orleans and are now called
Cajuns. We saw a woman (named Evangeline) statue
wishing to see her mate. Some years later when we went
to near New Orleans, we saw another Evangeline statue.
Some French folks fled to mountains and hid themselves.
We saw tricolor French flags with yellow stars flying
at some houses signifying Arcadians.Years later when we
were at Louisiana state, a guide told us that those French
descendants had been discriminated against and forbidden
to use French language. But he said that he had taught
French to his children. In the rebuilt fort we saw people
and soldiers dressed in colonial period costumes staying
in the fort and answering old-time living conditions.

Halifax, Capital of the province**

We saw an old Capital building, a fort, and a marine
museum. Again we had a lobster dinner.

Fundy National Park**

It was fall (word used in USA instead of autumn) time
and we saw beautiful and colorful foliage.

Saint John**

We went to a bridge where we observed Reversing Falls
caused by high and low tides-river water flowing back
to inland twice a day.

Campobello Island**

We took a tour of the summerhouse of the late former
president, Franklin D. Roosevelt.

Acacia National Park**

We enjoyed scenic marine park.

Kennebunkport**

This small town has a fairy-tale-like house (decorated
like a dollhouse) and the former George Bush resorts
house. We went to a restaurant where he and his wife
frequented dining. My wife looked back of her table and
a man held two fingers up like 'V' letter. He meant
that he had two lobsters with big smile on his face.
Maine State is well known for lobsters.

Next morning we drove back to Boston and flew back to home.
We stayed at B & Bs (bed-and-breakfast places like
'Minshuku' with shared bathtubs and toilets at most of
places) several times. (Most of times we were the only
guests.) They were very nicely furnished and decorated
--very economical, and we had delicious and wonderful
breakfasts. We received personal attentions from hosts.
In the USA B & Bs are also nice but rather expensive.
We ate dry cereal for breakfast we took along, boiled
water with a heating element we took (a sort of heating
coil sold at camping equipment store), brew black tea,
had leftover dinner for lunch, ate at restaurants for
dinners, and asked for doggie-bags. Americans tell
waitresses that they would like to take leftover meals
to feed their own dogs- just excuse--actually they eat
at home later.

Russia,Finland,and Estonia

For 3 and half weeks in August 1997 we joined a travel group
to Russia,Finland, and Estonia. All of 68 were American senior
citizens (my wife and I were the only Orientals). We flew to
New York City and stayed at our son's apartment for 2 days.

We flew to Helsinki, Finland, then to Saint Petersburg where
we boarded on a river cruise boat which accommodated
approximately 250 passengers with some young British and Germans
on board.

In St. Petersburg we saw the winter and summer palaces,
Hermitage, Russian folk dances, and the house where
Rasputin was killed before the revolution (he had a great
influence on the Empress, because he cured the prince's
hemophilia by praying.A group of royal family members
plotted to kill him and shot him. After they celebrated
the assassination, one member went back to find Rasputin
still alive and walking outside the building. Shocked,
they tossed Rasputin into river. He died of extreme cold.)

We also saw the warship Aurora that fired the first shot
to the palace, thus beginning the revolution. The boat
took us through rivers, canals, lakes, and 16 locks (bringing
the boat up and down like the Panama Canal) to Moscow. We were
surprised to see one blind American tourist accompanied by his
wife. He claimed to be able to feel sceneries and enjoyed his
trip with help of wife's explanations. It was very interesting
and educational to see Russian country sites, old architectures,
and histories. One of troubles was that meals served on board
(3 times a day) tasted terrible-different flavors, slightly salty,
not many varieties, flat tastes, and a few fruits. One American
couple said that when they had traveled to Soviet Russia 10 years
ago, Russian people were quiet and unfriendly; however, this time
people were more friendly, open-minded, and more anxious to sell
goods. They told us that a guide in St. Petersburg was criticizing
the communism, but not in Moscow. We found that Chinese people
were more active business traders (we went to China in 1996)
than Russian counterparts. At one middle-sized town a guide
told us that during the 2nd World War the town was occupied by
Finn soldiers who removed a Lenin's statue, broke it into pieces,
and spreaded them around. When Soviet soldiers recaptured the
town, they collected the pieces and reassembled the statue except
the missing head. The communist officials ordered a Lenin's head
to be made in Moscow. When the artists brought the head, they
found that Lenin's statue already had a hat in his hand and the
statue did not need another hat on his head. The artists were
later prosecuted. This is a typical communist bureaucratic example!
The guide told us that as far as he was concerned, he did not care
about Lenin statue. In Moscow we saw museums, cathedrals, and hustle
-bustles. We went to 20th floor of a tourist hotel and I took
pictures of Kremlin and Red Square-I could be arrested as a spy
in the old cold-war period. I observed that Russian people were
poor and struggling hard to survive-especially old people
(pensioners) begging for donations and children collecting candies
from tourists.

When we took a Finn Airline to Helsinki, Finland, everyone was
delighted to have Western-style meals. Helsinki is a beautiful city
(stayed for 3 nights). We felt a kind of relief from the depressed
Russia (we still have stigma of the Iron Curtain cold war feeling).
Things were expensive (not in Russia) like Japan and European
countries. We surely appreciate American life-inexpensive foods
and goods.
Sixteen of us made farewell to the rest of group (48 of them)
and took a cruise liner to Tallinn, Estonia (3-hour ride). We heard
that many Finns go to Estonia to buy goods because of lower prices.
Tallinn has an old town section-feudal mid-century type atmosphere
-housings and churches. We ate at restaurants with one dish sharing
together for about $10 total each time. A guide told us that during
the early part of the World War II, Soviet Russia invaded (with a
secret pact agreement with Nazis German government) and occupied
Estonia (also Latvia and Lithuania). During that time about 5 million
Russian passed through 1.5 million-populated Estonia because of higher
living standard, and they made a tidy country to untidy. Besides 10,000
Estonian (mostly government officials and intellectuals) were arrested
and sent to Siberia where many died. The Russian had worked at heavy
industrial places that are now no longer subsidized and they are now
in poor condition. Estonians hate Russians and want to get rid of them.

For your reference I added travel expense sheet as follows:
Group expense (Airfare round-trip from New York)
-----------------------$7,027.90
(We took round-trip air-flights using mileage privilege.)

the Soviet Chairman, no joke!)

East trip

We took our third major trip of this year to the East from
July 9 to 23. We flew to New York City (my 10th? and her
5th? visits)to attend our son's wedding ceremony and reception party.
in Manhattan Island. Then we rented a car and drove 2700 km for 10
days covering NY, PA, NJ states and Ontario Province.
Points of interest are listed as follows:

***West Point(NY) U.S.Army Military Academy where many officers were
trained. Gen. Macarthur's mother was said to be staying at nearby
hotel to watch her son's room light to check whether or not he was
studying. As result he was the top cadet for a long time. Gen.Geo.
Patton's statue was placed in front of the library, because he stayed
at the academy for 5 years and did not know where the library was.

***Hyde Park(NY) Franklyn D. and Eleanor Roosevelt's homes and museum
and graves. Vandervilt's mansion.

***Samuel F.B. Morse Historic Site(NY) He invented a telegraph device.
When he made some fortune in Europe, he sent his wife a mail which
reached her three days after her death. Shocked, he was thinking
of fast ways of sending a message.

***Toronto(Ontario) We went to CNN tower to see the city and enjoyed art
museum where impressionism works were exhibited.

***Thousand Islands(NY) We took a boat ride and enjoyed spectacles.

***Niagara Falls(Ontario and NY) This was my fourth and her third visits.

***Mark Twain's Grave(NY)

***Hershey(PA) We took a ride showing how chocholate candies were
manufactured. We received free samples at the end.

***Valley Forge(PA) National Historic Park where George Washington and
is troop suffered from malnutrition, cold diseases and deaths.
They were trained very well and later defeated British trrop.

***Thomas Edison Laboratory(NJ) Mr. Edison made a fortune inventing
stock exchange ticker, electric bulbs, phonograph, etc. He became
a millioneer at late 20 years old. He was the first person to have
an organized laboratory.

You informed me that you received my e-mail in Japanese.
I would like to clarify my points. My PC (personal computer)
has no Japanese key-board.(This is obvious, because my PC
is made-in-USA. I did not think of writing Japanese at the
beginning.) First of all I have to write Japanese
sentencesusing Japanese word processing file. Secondly
I have to copy the sentences and paste them on an e-mail sheet.
In the process sometimes the following happens. If I write
long lines in Japanese, some lines will be broken into two
lines and second line shows garbages, i.e., untellligible
alphabets, numbers,or Chinese characters. By the way did
you receive my brief world travel list and list of countries
we visited?I do not claim to know English well. As a matter
of fact I used to have troubles with English lessons at
colleges here. However I had no other choice, so I struggled
with it. Did you show my letter to your coworkers?I hope to
write you soon. Hideo Nakayama
